I don't get how the director didn't like the demon used in the original ending when it's so much scarier than what was used in the final version. I'm sure someone out there has recut the film with the original ending re-edited back in. The original ending in my opinion is far superior and the demon creature looks far more frightening there, and it's a shame the original ending wasn't used as it fits much better with the rest of the film and the demon's true form is much better. The true form of the main demon although cool-looking in it's own right is pretty underwhelming for being the final form and the demon dwarves are more comical than anything. The highlights in terms of gore are definitely the crucified, disemboweled man hanging upside-down (which I'm shocked didn't cause an uproar with religious groups back then) and a man vomiting up copious amounts of blood.ĭespite the gruesome content, it remains quite a cerebral, atmospheric film up to the third act where it becomes a creature feature, in a sequence that although entertaining feels a bit out of place amongst the rest of the movie. There's plenty of gruesome and downright disgusting gore throughout and I wonder if the film had any issues with the MPAA with how nasty it gets at times. It has a very dark, ominous and sinister mood which you'd expect from a film concerning demonic entities at play. One thing about the film that stands out is it's cinematography which has a murky look but is frequently accompanied by bright red or blue colors in the lighting, giving it the look of a vintage Horror comic like Tales From The Crypt. The demonic activity is seemingly connected to some ritualistic activity at a nearby nightclub that's supposedly just a gimmick for entertainment but has seemingly actually succeeded in conjuring demonic forces that the priest must now confront, after previously being non-believing in the existance of the demonic. A well-made and intriguing film concerning a priest (played by the late, great Ben Cross) in New Orelans who after surviving a fall and not taking any damage from it, investigates demonic happenings after an old church where two priests were brutally murdered re-opens. Just recently I watched it for the very first time after being curious about it for many years, and it didn't let me down for the most part. This is from 1988 and those who owned The Monster Squad on VHS back in the day as I did, chances are you remember seeing the trailer for this at the beginning of the tape, which was my first exposure for it. Not to be confused with the more recent film of the same name from earlier this year.
